Two student Fulbright winners bound for Germany
Ohio University seniors Christina Matzen '11, a history major, and Matt Wagner '11, a journalism and German major, were each recently awarded 2011-12 Fulbright Awards.
Both students will travel to Germany in September for about 10 months to conduct research.
Matzen's research project is titled "(En)Gendering Nazi Crimes: Researching Aufseherinnen in Germany's Zentrale Stelle Archives." Wagner's research project is titled "German National Identity through Soccer."
Leite appointed to four-year term as dean
After serving as interim dean for the College of Health and Human Services and then College of Health Sciences and Professions, Randy Leite has been appointed as the dean of the College of Health Sciences and Professions for a four-year term beginning July 1.
Leite has been instrumental in overseeing such developments as the launch of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree on the Athens campus, the expansion of E-Learning programs, and assisting in the completion of the successful proposal to establish a University System of Ohio Center of Excellence in Health and Wellness.

OUr Day
On April 14, we celebrated Ohio University alumni with OUr Day. It was great to read so many heartwarming tweets tagged #OUrDay, watch as Facebook profile photos switched to OHIO graphics and see photos like the one above (Lindsay Crick, BSJ '05 in Columbia, S.C.). Salutations to the Centennial: Two Greek organizations turn 100
Both the Beta chapter of Phi Kappa Tau and the Pi chapter Alpha Xi Delta will be celebrating their centennials this spring. During the weekend of May 6-8, the Alpha Xi Delta sisters will once again be donning blue and gold as the Fuzzies reunite on campus to reminisce. The sisters will be enjoying meals together, as well as campus tours and an open house. On Saturday there will be a centennial dinner celebration.
May 20-22, the Phi Kappa Tau brothers will flash their Greek letters. The Honorable George V. Voinovich, AB '58, LLD '81 will serve as the Honorary Chairman for the centennial celebration. The Phi Kappa Tau centennial celebration banquet will be held on May 21, along with an array of activity ranging from a golf outing to the campus and house tours and an initiation ceremony. |
Emeriti to have their day
Saturday, May 21, will be declared Emeriti Day by both University
President Roderick J. McDavis and Athens Mayor Paul Wiehl. Emeriti Day
is a day to recognize and highlight the presence and role of all
Emeriti. This esteemed group is composed of faculty and administrative
presidential appointees who have completed a period of meritorious
service to OHIO and have been granted Emeritus or Emerita status by
the Ohio University Board of Trustees.
The Emeriti Association is comprised of those Emeriti choosing
to be annual or life-time members whose contributions include raising
money to build the Emeriti Park, located north of Peden Stadium, as
well as sustaining the park and providing volunteer assistance at The
Kennedy Museum and The Dairy Barn.
Emeriti Association president George Weckman said Emeriti Day
will take time to reflect on challenges, transformations and memories
of the university. There will be a panel discussion, “How the
University Has Changed in 40 Years,” at Alden Library at 1 p.m.
followed by a reception at Konneker Alumni Center at 3 p.m.

2011 Alumni Leaders Conference planned
Chapter and society leaders will be back on campus during the 2011 Alumni Leaders Conference, May 12-14. The conference provides sessions on best practices, ways to monitor finances, social media and goal-setting.
Alumni leaders will interact with students on the the Student Alumni Board and administrative staff from the university and the 10-member Leaders Advisory Council. This face-to-face interaction is central to the weekend goal: networking. Leaders will be able to compare strategies with each other. Current students can ask fellow Bobcats for career and networking advice. Graduating students will also be able to get the personal scoop on the best or most affordable places to live, where to find jobs, and where to locate the best eats.
A celebration dinner and awards ceremony will be held Friday evening to acknowledge the leaders' efforts. Awards include Outstanding Chapter and Society, Most Innovative Chapter and Society Program, Best New Chapter and Society, Best Reorganized Chapter and Society, and the Alumni Outreach Award. |
Holding on to what's golden with the Alumni College and Golden Weekend
The Golden anniversary of the Class of '61 and the 40th anniversary of the Class of '71, will be celebrated during Alumni College & Golden Weekend, July 14-17. Returning OHIO Alumni and "PURRR-ennial Bobcats" (graduates of the 1960s and prior) are welcomed back.
The weekend will present opportunities to relive the OHIO experience with Alumni College. Alumni can "graduate" again -- but this time, in just four days. Distinguished OHIO professors such as Dr. Scott Titsworth from the School of Communications Studies and Dr. Roger Cooper from the school of Media Arts and Studies will lead a variety of workshops all weekend.
Those who also want to relive their campus crush and say "OH, I dO" again can renew their vows during a ceremony at 18:04 in Galbreath Chapel. The military time 18:04 is in honor of Ohio University's founding year.
Catch up with friends and former classmates at any of the weekend's festivities, which include campus tours, an Ohio Valley Summer Theatre production of "Bye, Bye Birdie," and more.
Register before June 1 for Early Bird specials on rooms and accommodations. All other registrations must be received by June 24.

 Being a college student is not always easy, many times it is a juggling act. Throw in being a student organization president, an active member of Accounting Club, working as the accounting assistant in the Scripps College of Communications Dean’s office, and playing intramural broomball, softball and flag football, one seems bound to either drop a ball or say "goodbye" to a social life. However, accounting major and Student Alumni Board (SAB) President Sarah Burkhart '12 finds the time to not only soak up all Athens has to offer, but also give back to the community.
As the new SAB President, Burkhart will be running the Executive Board and full board meetings as well as overseeing the SAB-related philanthropic and university events. She will also serve as the student liaison for the Ohio University Alumni Association Board of Directors from the Student Engagement Committee. Burkhart's input will guide the committee's interactions on campus.
To date, her favorite events have been "Bare on the Bricks," a clothing drive co-hosted with Alpha Epsilon Pi and the "Diversity Leadership Luncheon" collaborated with CONNECT, a College of Business organization.

After a cold and breezy April, we're ready for spring here in Athens! The weather is finally starting to turn, the  blossoms just began to fall, and the students have already started to bust out the grills and volleyballs.
This month, we thought you'd enjoy a quick history lesson about one of our campus' signature features: the Yoshino and Double Weeping cherry trees that line the Hocking River. These trees were part of a gift from Chubu University in commemoration of our 175th and 200th anniversaries (in 1979 and 2004, respectively). Each spring they grace the riverfront with their beautiful and aromatic blossoms, and we have to say they're one of our favorite features on campus.
