Athens paints the town green for Homecoming
The eighth-annual Paint the Town Green food drive, sponsored by the Ohio University Student Alumni Board, gave local businesses an opportunity to show their support for OHIO while also giving back to the community. Throughout Homecoming Week 2011, Athens businesses collected donations for the Athens Food Pantry and created OHIO-themed displays for their store windows. Gift to College of Engineering grows to $124 million
What was already the largest charitable donation to any public engineering college in the United States has grown even more. A 2008 gift of $95 million from Fritz J. Russ, OHIO ‘42, and his wife, Dolores H. Russ, to the Russ College of Engineering has increased to $124 million, thanks to a recent acquisition by a high-tech engineering company whose shares were included in the original gift.

Adult learners find help with transition
Amidst a growing number of adult learners at Ohio University, transition advisors like Kim Jeffers play an indispensable role. Undergraduate students aged 25 years and older now make up 26 percent of students across all OHIO campuses, and Jeffers, a former non-traditional student herself, works to smooth the transition by providing adult learners with resources and advising opportunities.

Study abroad in Africa provides perspective on HIV/AIDS
Ohio University's first HIV/AIDS study abroad experience in South Africa gave 11 students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a culture dramatically different from their own. Students spent five weeks in South Africa over the summer, learning about the language, food, people and history of the region while also volunteering at local HIV/AIDS organizations.

Charlie Chaplin's brother profiled in new biography by OHIO professor
Lisa Stein Haven, an assistant professor of English at OHIO's Zanesville campus, recently published a book on Syd Chaplin, Charlie Chaplin's brother. Redesigned awards nominations offer convenience, simplicity
In anticipation of the 2012 Alumni Awards Nominations, OUAA has streamlined its awards nominations process, making it easier to recognize deserving alumni and friends of the university.

The process is now completed entirely online. Nominators simply visit the 2012 Nominations page and choose the form that corresponds to the award they are interested in nominating someone for. Awards categories include Alumnus/Alumna of the Year, the Medal of Merit Award, the Distinguished Service Award, the Charles J. and Claire O. Ping Recent Graduate Award and Honorary Alumnus/Alumna.

OUAA to volunteers: Thank you!
During this season of Thanksgiving, OUAA is proud to recognize the volunteers who form the backbone of our community. They are unsung heroes who willingly share their time, talents and treasure to help make our many programs, events and services run better and more smoothly. We want each and every volunteer to know how much he or she is appreciated.

By giving up their precious time, our volunteers help us to connect more alumni with each other, the Alumni Association and Ohio University as a whole. The countless hours they put into helping us organize and run over 450 events each year is an incredibly generous gift to their school and its students. The grand success of the Ohio University Alumni Association is due in large part to our volunteers and their tireless efforts.

So, volunteers, on behalf of your alma mater, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all that you share with your Alumni Association and your school.

Spotlight on volunteers

Laurie Manke Mitchell, BSC '92, MA '94, is a graduate of the Scripps College of Communication at Ohio University. While at Ohio University, Laurie was a member of OUAA's Student Alumni Board (SAB).

After graduation, Laurie worked as an executive assistant and continuous improvement coordinator for a large automotive manufacturer before becoming a stay-at-home mom more than eight years ago. Laurie played an instrumental role in starting the Greater Toledo Chapter for OHIO alumni, and she currently serves as both secretary and treasurer of the chapter.

Looking back on her experience with the Greater Toledo Chapter, Laurie said, "It has been an honor to be involved with Kevin Clingaman and Pam and Scott Adair trying to get the Greater Toledo Chapter started. I would love to see more OU alumni from the Toledo area get involved and reconnect!"
