Bobcat wins Nobel Prize
Ohio University alumnus Venkatraman "Venki" Ramakrishnan, Ph.D. '76, has received a 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on the function of ribosomes.
"Dr. Ramakrishnan's work is paying forward in ways that are saving lives around the world,” said President Roderick J. McDavis, “I can think of no greater example of fulfilling The Promise of Ohio University."
Alumnus on 'The Today Show'
OHIO alumnus and iconic photographer, Herman Leonard '47, was recently featured on NBC's "Today Show" to discuss his free exhibit, "In The Best Possible Light: Herman Leonard's Jazz." Leonard's exhibit will run through February 14, 2010 at Lincoln Center in New York City.
WOUB celebrates 60 years
The WOUB Radio Network celebrated its 60th anniversary during Homecoming weekend, Oct. 16-18. Former staff and students gathered to celebrate the anniversary with a reception and tour of the station on Friday evening, which featured photos and memorabilia from throughout WOUB Radio's history. The station began transmitting programs to dorms on the Ohio University campus in 1946 for six hours each day, playing live music, breaking news reports and radio dramas.
Avionics leader receives top honor
Richard H. McFarland, director emeritus of the Avionics Engineering Center and professor emeritus of electrical engineering, received the President's Citation of Merit Award at the Air Traffic Controllers Association (ATCA) conference Monday in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes his more than 40 years of research and development in aircraft navigation and landing systems that have promoted air travel safety and dependability worldwide.
First class of pre-nursing students begins coursework
The Athens campus welcomed its first class of pre-nursing students this fall, which will go on to become the bachelor of science in nursing Class of 2013. It is the only four-year BSN degree program in southeast Ohio. The 207 students are all taking Nursing 101 this fall, titled clinical judgment, which covers nursing ethics, standards, law and critical thinking.

OHIO named Center of Excellence in Energy
Gov. Ted Strickland announced last week that Ohio University has been named a Center of Excellence in Energy and the Environment. The designation recognizes the institution’s state and national reputation for energy and pollution research, as well as its potential to create jobs in the field.
The area of energy and the environment encompasses the research of more than 30 faculty and staff members at Ohio University. Current research focuses on the production and delivery of energy and fuels, as well as the monitoring and control of the air and water pollution that results from fuel production. |

Angela Eddings '94, '98 is a dedicated alumna of Ohio University, which she refers to as "the best school in Ohio." Currently a teacher for the Columbus City Schools at Africentric Early College, she has encouraged 10 former students to attend Ohio University based on her love of the school and the stories she would share with her English classes. "I love OU and am very proud of the quality of African American students I help attend the university," Angela said.
"Angela is committed to supporting undergraduate students as they strive to reach their educational and personal goals," said Melanie L. Hayden, Ph.D., Interim Director, Undergraduate Admissions. We are especially grateful to her for assisting us with the recruitment of future generations of Bobcats."
