What to know
before you go
Even the most experienced travelers might not know these travel abroad tips from the U.S. Department of State:

Register with the State Department so that they can contact you in the event of an emergency in the U.S. or where you are traveling. Information about your whereabouts will not be released to others without your authorization.

Leave copies of your itinerary, passport date page and visas with trusted family or friends back in the U.S. so they may contact or aid you in the event of an emergency.

Check with your medical insurance company for whether your policy applies abroad or covers emergency expenses such as medical evacuation. If not, consider supplemental insurance such as the policy provided by the USI.

Take precautions to avoid being a target of crime. Avoid wearing expensive clothing and jewelry and protect carry-around items such as fanny packs, purses and shopping bags.
