Early spring greetings from Ohio University!

Kelli BellIn Athens, the snow continues to fall, but spring is right around the corner. Spring is a time for fresh starts. As the flora and fauna begin anew this spring, you might consider making a fresh start yourself. You can simultaneously create something new and leave a legacy that will touch the lives of others by creating a supporting organization.

A supporting organization combines elements of a private foundation and a public charity. This hybrid philanthropic vehicle can be an attractive alternative to a private family foundation. A supporting organization is an entity that escapes the restrictions of a private foundation by being affiliated with one or more public charities, such as The Ohio University Foundation. In return for the close affiliation, the supporting organization receives substantial tax benefits. And like a private foundation, a supporting organization allows for family involvement in the giving process.

As winter thaws into spring, consider creating a lasting legacy with a supporting organization. In this issue, you can read an article about the advantages of a supporting organization, and an article about the Sugar Bush Foundation, a supporting organization of The Ohio University Foundation. As always, I would be happy to talk with you if you would like more information!

Sincerely,

Kelli L. Bell
